OLD BEAR by Kevin Henkes

old_bearWhile he hibernates, Old Bear has the sort of dreams that only a bear who has appreciated living in all seasons could have: flowers the size of trees in Spring, skies raining blueberries in Summer, fish turning orange and yellow in Autumn, the Northern Lights sparkling in winter. With thickly outlined figures and gentle watercolor washes, Henkes hits the comfortable center between the coziness of a winter nap and the wild flights of ursine imagination. Old Bear himself is not so wild that you wouldn’t want him sleeping near you. He’s got claws, but they look more like fingers than daggers and his expression is benevolent. What can one say about Kevin Henkes? Bingo!                                  JP  R+*
