daisy-dawson-1In the first book of this new series, Daisy Dawson frees a butterfly from a spider’s web and soon discovers she can talk with animals. When a dog named Boom goes missing, Daisy turns to her new animal friends (including a horse named Meadowsweet and a squirrel named Cyril) to help her find and rescue him. In the second book, the animals join her on an expedition to a pond that is home to two otters, where she must take a picture of their habitat for her school project. Though definitely set in the present (Daisy has a new digital camera), these charming books invoke the spirit of an idyllic past in a rural setting. They offer subtle lessons on respecting nature and caring for friends. Despite the flowery language and full description, the books are quick-paced and should entice reluctant readers.daisy-dawson-2
