MARLEY GOES TO SCHOOL by John Gorgan, illustrated by Richard Cowdrey (HarperCollins)

marley goes to schoolThis unoriginal story is saved by the cheerful, infectious, goofy dog Marley who wants to go to school with his best pal Cassie.  There’s Marley holding crayons and pencils in his mouth next to Cassie who is getting her school gear together. As expected, Marley is not allowed to go to school with Cassie, but, as expected, he digs his way out of his yard and causes mayhem in the school as he searches for her. There is the requisite chaos of Marley stealing hotdogs in the lunchroom, Marley beating the drum in the band room, Marley releasing a cage of white mice, and Marley getting chased by the adults. It all ends happily. No surprises here, but the drawings and mayhem have appeal.
