Program: Joint Children and Teen Services Meeting – Summer Debriefing
Focus: 2010 has been an amazing year for summer reading and our libraries have never been busier or more creative! Many of you were programming on a shoestring. We will share and assess the summer’s programs – what worked, what didn’t, and what can be adapted for the school year. We will also look at the Evanced On-Line Registration and will be sharing your comments with NYS and Evanced.

Program: Joint Children and Teen Services Meeting – Fairy Tales: Retellings that honor old traditions by updating them for today’s kids
Focus: Journey into the dark and grim world of fairy tales with Adam Gidwitz, author of A Tale Dark and Grimm, whose bold reworkings of Grimm tales will enthrall you as well as the kids and remind us all of the power and relevance of these stories.

Program: Teen Services Meeting – Teen Behaviors in the Library
Focus: Teens can sometimes be disruptive in the library. Learn how to defuse argumentative, confrontational and inappropriate behavior before it gets out of hand.

Program: Children’s Services Meeting – From Beginning Readers to Fluent Reading
Focus: Libraries focus a lot of attention on the under fives, but what is happening with our early elementary school audience? We will explore best practices on how to support emerging readers and what kind of programs work best. Topics to think about: Book Clubs, Collections & Displays, Programs & Marketing.

Program: Teen Services Meeting – Westchester’s Choice 2009
Focus: Bring your favorite teen titles of 2008 to discuss for the new Westchester’s Choice list.

Program: Children’s Services Meeting- Books to Share Nominations
Focus: Bring one picture book and one title for older kids to recommend for Books to Share publication. Please post your nominations on the children’s wiki or e-mail your nominations to jrovenger@wlsmail.org (include title, author, illustrator, publisher and category) before or after the meeting.
Plus Holiday festivities.

Special Interest Workshops and Classes:
Dates: October 12, October 26, November 9
Program: Booktalking
Focus: This three session workshop will demonstrate what booktalking is and why it is the most effective means we have to generate enthusiasm for reading. Find out how to incorporate booktalking skills into your everyday reader’s advisory toolkit and how to use them in cooperation with your school librarian in preparation for summer reading lists.

Program: Tech Sandbox
Focus: Come play and learn! Bring your questions and curiosity to the newly configured WLS Computer Training Lab and take advantage of this opportunity for individual help and group exploration of Web 2.0 Tools, from Blogs and Wikis to Online Photo sharing, Youtube, etc.

Program: Spanish Conversation for Librarians
Focus: Learn basic Spanish and practice the conversations that you will likely encounter in the library setting. A fun learning experience with Nancy Coradin.
